'If there's ever a bloke': The RWC three-peat may finally be within reach

Rassie Erasmus, Director of Rugby, looks on prior to the Summer International match between New Zealand All Blacks v South Africa at Twickenham Stadium on August 25, 2023 in London, England. (Photo by David Rogers/Getty Images)

The Springboks became just the second team in history to win consecutive Rugby World Cups with their 12-11 victory over the All Blacks in Paris last month. A three-peat has never been achieved.

Instrumental in both victories was South African coach – and recently Director of Rugby – Rassie Erasmus. The unconventional and influential rugby mind has just been reinstated as head coach for the team and will look to trailblaze a new kind of history in 2027’s Rugby World Cup in Australia.

South Africa already have the highest success rate in Rugby World Cup history, winning four of the eight tournaments they have participated in. A win in 2027 would advance their claim as the best rugby nation of the modern era to an undeniable extent, and push Erasmus’ legacy to previously unscaled heights.

“I just think, man he loves what he does,” Former All Black James Parsons said of the Springbok coach on the Aotearoa Rugby Pod. “We’ve spoken at length about how he is his own man and I admire that about him.

“The exciting thing is the story that can be told over the next four years, of him looking to do a three-peat, whether he’s Director of Rugby or whatever, we all know he was a big part of both those World Cup wins and you wouldn’t put it past him.

“If there’s ever a bloke that could probably go three in a row, it would be him.”

With the bulk of the 2023 winning team also featuring in the 2019 final, age is not on many of the players’ side. Veteran loose forward Duane Vermeulen has already announced his retirement.

The Springboks were by far the oldest squad at the Rugby World Cup, entering the tournament as the only team with an average age of over 30.

There is likely to be a significant amount of turnover within the national ranks between now and 2027, but with Erasmus on board to steer the ship, the young players will inherit a winning foundation and a progressive plan.

“The thing is, the best coaches do front load a lot of this so that when it comes to when you’re actually going and living through it, the plan’s there, it’s just then executing and staying on task,” Parsons added.

“He’s an innovator. He likes to be first, not just in winning but he likes to do things first. He likes to lead the way and be that step ahead.

“It’s an exciting time for South African rugby, and I think the public will be the happiest. We know that their fans are pretty passionate and they all love Rassie, so it’s a big win for them.”

Remember my words on this post we will win three times in a row it is our destiny to do so. Both Rassie and Sia is born for this, and it is already written, and they don’t even know it.

Nigel, if there was a WC for plonkers you would walk the QF, SF and

Final, which is more than Ireland did. And you would hold the title for 4 years, which is worthy of your personality. Congrats 😂

Someone should ask Bill Beaumont who will win.

4 more English referees on the 2027 panel and Tom Foley running the game from the stands, it will be up to Bill - again.

With Owens gone and now Barnes, WR will hopefully get rid of a few more multiple SA Man of the Match award winning officials by 2027. Here’s hoping.

As long as refs stay neutral SA are not winning RWC 2027.

Rassie got the double by scoring no points in the second half and outscored two tries to zero whilst shutting down numerous other opposition tries with professional fouls. Let's see if he can go the three peat with no points in either half or tries and nail the world championship with a penalty shootout 👌

SA were tired against England and in the final. They put everything into establishing a lead against NZ in first half. NZ were the 4th best team in the world cup and due to the draw we nearly had a ridiculous England-New Zealand final. NZ can have no complaints.

@CO Yes! Rassie is the worst coach ever. Won the WC in 2019. Won against B&I Lions. Won the most difficult WC ever. Very lucky to win. Pathetic coach and team. ABs drew against B&I Lions. Didn't have the bmt to win 2019 or 2023 WC. Just look at the facts. ABs and Foster much better.

The best thing about any Bok-positive article is the inevitable turkey in the comments moaning about tactics, the ref and everything else that didn't go their way. Rewind a couple of years, and it was McCaw and company doing exactly the same things. The Boks can play expansively when needed (think Twickenham, Mbombela, group stages of RWC) but they also know when and how to grind a win out when necessary (Finals). But by all means, keep the salty comments coming. It makes the win that much sweeter…

C
CF 607 days ago

you sound like Trump with his stolen election bollocks, get a grip - you lost, you were outsmarted and outplayed and the Boks are World champions (again and still…)

N
Ninjin 607 days ago

He did not win the 2023 world cup. South Africa won their FOURTH WORLD CUP🥳 under coach Nienaber against a poor All Black team lacking in leadership and coached by well you know the rest. Saying South Africa cheated is saying Barnes assisted and after death threats from Nz fans Barnes still came out to bat for them. Makes one think neh. Maybe by 2031 Rassie will have led The Springboks to three world cups but I think the French and Irish might have a crack at it too unless the All Blacks find new ways to cheat like they did in 2011 and 2015.

C
CR 607 days ago

Personally I think Rassie has bigger fish to fry than winning another RWC, our rugby team is so much more than just a rugby team. The country is constantly on the brink of collapse and we have so many problems from zama zamas to corrupt politicians, crime, electricity, illegal immigrants, racism, inequality etc etc etc. If Rassie can keep winning a few games against 1st world countries then he is already the best ever coach there ever was or will be. People really have no idea how hard it is in South Africa atm. The Springboks is pretty much the only sign of hope in the country for a long time, since Mandela and 1995.

M
MM 606 days ago

Very well said Chris Kolisi should have dedicated the RWC title to all those Saffas trying to get by earning an honest living and to those fighting against corruption who most likely pay with their lives.

J
Jeff 607 days ago

A country revolving around rugby… Sad really.

S
SF 607 days ago

Yes he can do it. Emphasis on can. As long as the Boks don’t become arrogant and stay grounded, there is no reason why they can't do it. Rassie will temper the egos. There is no place for egos in his teams.

Most of game drivers will still play in 2027. Hooker might be a challenge. There are enough high quality forwards to replace the old outgoing ones. Kwagga to start as 8 from now. Backs are young enough with Esterhuysen replacing De Allende. Pollard will be okay as long as he is injury free.

It will be a mighty challenge to do 3 in a row. The top sides have all improved and will do so in the next 4 years. we saw this year that there is nothing between the top 5/6 sides in the world. Wales and England will improve.

It's still a long way away, but 2027 might be even better than this year with many teams that can win it.

S
SC 606 days ago

Why do you say many teams can win it? It’s 20 years since any team other than nz or boks won it? Oz and England have faded badly and it feels like the game is dying there. New zealand will win the next one in oz by a margin.

B
Blanco 607 days ago

I think the improved draw alone will make it a better tournament. Imagine SA/FRA/IRE/NZ as the semi final teams. Thats what should have happened this year.

Can Les Bleus avoid a Black-wash in New Zealand?

but I do not accept that international rugby and who plays France in France doesn’t matter not a big deal we will just get somebody else who cares ?

I’m sorry, my bad, it doesn’t sound right when read under this angle

This part of my post you are refering to was certainly poorly worded as I wasn’t weighting an AB test playing in France (or not) vs the huge audience and media attention it gets all the time, or not, if not played.

By “not a big deal”, I mostly meant financially for FFR as, contrary to many other Rugby Unions (most as broke as FFR) who are still making nearly all their money with such big events tickets sale, FFR is not. Using the Stade de France* even when it was sold out or near full capacity (something garanteed for an AB game) was only for the operator to turn on profits. Hence they would survive an AB boycott because not as much was at stake compared to other Unions who are still desperately chasing the biggest crowds as possible in order to survive.

Also, I don’t think that the NZRU could push other Unions to boycott France over sending a development team on summer tours, like say when South Africa was boycotted over apartheid. So, the FFR would also survive that (with less audience but less drama).

Because WR can’t help without juridiction on team selection, France is simply fulfilling their engagement by sending whatever team they want. By the way, that’s why WR is trying to sell a “Nation League?” instead of tours, in order to up what’s at stakes but it probably won’t change anything for the French selection in July.

(*) conditions were reviewed and improved, as FFR was going to reconsider playing in the Stade de France at all.

you would expect the first game since Bok world champs knocked the French boys out at the WC surely would be more than that? that’s how I would market it anyhow !! Revenge game ! And that will be a major rugby event even tho u don’t think so

When you are overstretched and can’t do everything with the means at your disposal, the best way is to rank those tasks and assign your best forces following priorities:

- WC knock out game

- 6 Nations Chelem or decider game

- WC pool game

- (…)

- November International

- July International

Looks like what Galthié is doing is also matching priorities for the French public manipulated by the media coverage.

But the domestic record audience was for a WC knock out game which wasn’t vs. RSA in 2023. Why would an old game vs England score above 20 million and a pool game vs New Zealand with low drama would nearly score as much as this knock out quarter final.

I don’t know but maybe it’s because England are the French arch-enemies, ABs’ are the most renowned team and RSA is simply not there yet. We’ll see and I certainly can be wrong in my pronostic and 15 million will turn up for this game.

Can Les Bleus avoid a Black-wash in New Zealand?

Please, tell me who exactly are all those millionaires owning the Top 14?

And, by the way, can you tell me who are also those that ever transformed a single French club into their cash cow?

It’s probably an old cliché comming from, some time ago in early pro time, the revival of both Ile-de-France clubs by private investors like J. Lorenzetti at Racing 92, or the rise of Toulon’s “Gallacticos” under Mourad Boudjellal, ending with the very noisy late Altrad investments into Montpellier-Hérault. Even if a few major titles were collected by those clubs, and that it would indeniably have helped to rise the fame of the whole Top 14, the global return on private investments simply didn’t ever pay back what they put in.

Another look into the last decade will show you that French clubs are not millionaires pet-projects either. From this season top 6, amongst Stade Toulousain (1st), Union Bordeaux-Bègles (2nd), Rugby Club Toulonnais (3rd), l’Aviron Bayonnais (4th), Clermont-Auvergne (5th) and Castres Olympique (6th), only the last two are backed by historical corporate entities: Michelin (tires) for Clermont and Laboratoires Pierre Fabre (pharma) for Castres.

That’s long term sponsorship from those city main industries and, with Stade Toulousain since 1907, Clermont and Castres (one of the lowest budget in Top 14), are also the oldest members of the French rugby club elite. This certainly prove some healthy stability in their management. They are in fact as far away from marketing “products” that they are from Paris.

But in Top 14, as reflected by their national team selection, club power is certainly measured by their success. The most successful of them all, Stade Toulousain, reached a 2023-2024 budget comparable with the lower end of a French elite football club (those not named PSG) and half of it’s income (€30 millions) was comming from merchandising sales only. Last monday, UBB sold out, in a matter of few hours, its 20K season ticket (out of their 32K seats stadium) and La Rochelle’s stadium was also sold out faster than I can type it for every single game of last season; and so on.

Now, take only those three clubs providing 90% of the national team and paying 100% of their wages. Tell them that the share of the limited game time allowed to their top players, will rise from 25% to 40% for the national team, without any further compensation for the club than allowing them to spend more in recruitment (of probably lesser quality substitutes).

See how it goes now with their board and Presidents, even if probably all of them are turning real profits.
